the first day of spring and evil birds

I hate robins.

Yes, the cute little state bird of Michigan. I hate them.

Today is the first day of spring, which means that these intolerable creatures will inevitably be showing up to terrorize me for another year.

A few years ago, I'm sitting in my living room enjoying my Saturday morning coffee when my son Jack comes upstairs from his bedroom looking quite distressed. He says, "Mom, there's a bird that won't stop flying at my window. I'm trying to sleep and it just keeps hitting it over and over."

He isn't kidding.

I go downstairs, and I find that there is a robin repeatedly flying into his bedroom windows. If you don't believe me, check out the video here.

Perplexed, I go outside to inspect.

The landscaping rocks outside of Jack's windows look like a scene from Forensic Files. There is blood everywhere. That dumb fucking robin has hit the window so many times that he has broken his beak and yet, STILL he continues.

I think, "HOW CAN A BIRD THIS SIZE HAVE LOST THIS MUCH BLOOD AND STILL BE ALIVE???"

I have no idea why this is happening.

Enter google.

As it turns out, robins (yes, the bird with such a sweet reputation) are some of the most aggressive birds around. They are extremely territorial, and when there is another robin on their turf, it will not be tolerated.

It also turns out that seeing their own reflection in our windows is also intolerable.

So, in an effort to save this bird's life, Jack and I spend the rest of the morning covering his bedroom windows in paper. And then my kitchen windows.

But it's not over.

The next thing I know, the robin, no longer dealing with its reflection nemesis on my newly covered home windows, is perched on the side mirror of my car sitting in the driveway. And it begins to attack its reflection in my driver's side window.

This results not only in blood continuing to squirt everywhere, but also in it shitting down the side of my driver's door each time it hits the window.

For weeks that spring, I drive through the car wash twice a day to remove the massive streaks of bird crap and blood from my SUV.

As a lawyer, you might sometimes find yourself acting a lot like that adorable yet insufferable bird.

You can spend a lot of time fighting in the only ways you know how, only to discover that the place you are inflicting damage is on yourself.

My mission with LawStory is to give lawyers like you a new way to fight for your clients - a new way to frame your client's stories, a new way to approach your advocacy. One that won't feel like slamming your face into a window over and over again.

I love nerding out about storytelling ... and Erin Gerner invited me onto her podcast, Powerhouse Lawyers, to do just that. I've had a bunch of questions lately about what kind of lawyers I work with and the different ways to work with me, so I thought it might be a good time to send out this summary. Who do I work with? criminal defense lawyers civil plaintiffs lawyers family law attorneys in states where cases are tried to juries I do not work with lawyers who work for governments, insurance companies, or large corporations. As a young lawyer, I received plenty of bad advice. I learned many bad trial habits that I ultimately had to unlearn. I've spent a lot of time wishing that I'd had better resources and better mentors early on in my career. So when I see bad advice being given to other lawyers, it gets under my skin a bit. There's one piece of bad advice that I see given often that really grates on me: Cross examination is about "poking holes" in your opponent's story. If you're a lawyer and you're reading...
